Rough House

Echo Park, Los Angeles, 2025/26
Single Family

Rough House  is a large addition to a two-bedroom bungalow on a steep and narrow hillside lot in Echo Park.  The three-story addition comprises an ADU, an extended kitchen and patio, a family room, and primary suite. Maintaining the terracing logic of the site, the new mass stacks and twists to allow continued connection with the site and views. Crouching beneath a deep overhang, the project mobilizes the ubiquitous language of the Craftsman roof and dormer to minimize the appearance on the site. Working within the Los Angeles residential material palate, the design deploys both rough and smooth material articulation to unravel and explore the seams between the high and the low, the found and the new, the everyday and the rarified, to find a new attitude of these forms and materials.
