Horizon Library
Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles, 2023
Commercial
Horizon Library is part room and part wall; an integrated library to house the book collection of photographer Catherine Opie in her Los Angeles studio. As the studio’s functions have expanded to host guest curators, gallerists, and visiting artists, the library has expanded to accommodate an extensive collection as well as to provide an intimate space for reading and dining as well as surface area for work and display. The design wraps the dining room with a tall wall of books that also conceal the service stair to the offices above. Alongside this, a lower set of movable bookcases, create a loose, adjustable enclosure. These rolling units can serve as temporary display or additional work surfaces, adapting to the changing needs of the studio from shoot to shoot. An inky-blue stain on the lower shelves forms a continuous horizon line—echoing themes in Opie’s photographic work—and visually ties the shelving together. This horizontal datum strengthens the sense of enclosure within the expansive volume of the studio.
